Since March is Women’s History Month, we were inspired to kick off the month’s jam sessions with female artists who will definitely leave you feeling empowered. Here are three women we are obsessed with.
1. Birdy - "Keeping Your Head Up"
Ever since we discovered Birdy’s cover version of Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love,” we have been enthralled by her voice and music style. According to Spotify, she’s been composing since seven years old and signed by fourteen. Hands down, an inspiring woman.
Her new song, “Keeping Your Head Up,” is a catchy, supportive tune. She said herself that, "it's meant to feel powerful and uplifiting. It’s about finding a light in the dark, having the strength to hold on to it and overcome the times when we feel completely lost.”
2. MisterWives - "Not Your Way"
Mandy Lee is the frontwoman of the band MisterWives. She is an extremely talented vocalist, and we've had the pleasure of seeing the band perform live in Santa Ana at The Observatory.
Before performing “Not Your Way” at our show, Mandy stepped upon a mini stage and proceeded to do push-ups as she said, “Santa Ana! Do you ever feel that society’s standards for women and for men are complete and utter bullsh*t?!”
The song “Not Your Way” is about standing up for yourself and defying constraining expectations. We admire that Mandy’s focus isn’t only to write hit songs but to write songs that send strong messages.
3. Marina and The Diamonds - "I Am Not A Robot"
Marina and The Diamonds is the stage name for Marina Diamandis. Her songs are quirky with a side of sass. Unsatisfied with studying music at universities, she left to create her own content. From Spotify, we learned that Marina dislikes being compared to other artists simply because they share the same gender. Whether female or male, artists come from the same pool of talent. “I Am Not A Robot” encourages us to embrace who we are and to ditch any walls and masks we hide behind.
We hope that reading about these empowering women and hearing their music will motivate you to pave your own way towards what your heart really wants as well!
Happy Women’s History Month!
